Today, February 13th, 2022, marks our 35th anniversary. Over the past 35 years, it has both been an honour and a privilege to be a part of SBCS Global Learning Institute. Together, we have shaped and enriched the lives of thousands of individuals, and this, more than anything else, is our greatest contribution to our country, region, and humanity.
Who could have imagined in 1987, that a small tertiary institute located in San Juan, far removed from the acknowledged centres of higher education, would grow into one of the region’s premier educational institutions? From then to now, the educational landscape has been in an almost constant state of flux, with SBCS being most radically impacted on two notable occasions: the removal of GATE funding for our programmes in 2017, and the pandemic in 2020.
Both of these revolutionary events shook our foundation to its core, but our resilience shone through. To survive, many difficult decisions had to be made including the closure of our satellite campuses, a consolidation of staff, and a diversification of our portfolio.
During this tumultuous period, we found inspiration in the Latin phrase on our website, found under our watchwords of Trust, Excellence and Passion: Vincit Qui Patitur, which translates into, “He who endures will succeed”.
This statement truly epitomizes our journey over the past 35 years, as despite the challenges, we have endured, and continue to enrich the lives of our students.
An organization can only rise to prominence and persist over so many years if it has a clear and worthy vision, one that is in harmony with its team members. We are truly fortunate at SBCS GLI to have been able to attract and retain a community of like-minded individuals over the past three and a half decades, who share our passion for education and human development.
This includes every single member of the SBCS GLI community: staff, faculty, students, alumni and stakeholders. My sincere thanks to each of you; thank you for being part of the SBCS GLI story.
Our students have stood with us through both the good and bad times, and neither the loss of GATE funding nor the move to online classes was enough to shake their trust and faith in us. Please accept my sincere thanks and know that while many things have changed over the past years, our commitment to excellence, and to you, have not.
Our corporate mantra is as relevant today as it was at the beginning:
“At SBCS, we have but one overarching goal, which is to deliver an excellent service to our students; at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always excellence!”
Finally, I would like to thank my family. They have been the wind beneath my wings over the past 35 years and have sacrificed and contributed immensely to the development of every facet of SBCS GLI.
I believe that we have reached the cusp of a new era, and together with our community, I look forward to the coming chapters of our unfolding story with faith, confidence and hope.
