This course aims to produce a group of leading-edge practitioners who have mastered the full range of theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the conduct of their research and professional activities at the highest level. Using specifically designed materials you will gain a horough grasp of the theoretical foundations of research. This will include advanced theory from a number of different social science disciplines, e.g., sociology; economics; management science; the psychology of learning; sociology of education and education and training policy.

 

Programme Content

The Doctorate course is studied completely by Distance Learning (minimum 48 months - maximum 72 months). There are two core modules: Module 1 has four units covering research training and Module 2 consists of four options. Once these are completed you will produce a thesis proposal and, if this is accepted, proceed to write the thesis (50,000 words). The Doctorate Module 2 option currently available are:

• Comparing National Education and Training Systems

• Vocational Education and Lifelong Learning

• National Culture and HRD

• The Changing Contours of the Labour Market

• Youth Transitions and the Labour Market

• Globalisation and HRD

• Theories of Growth, Worker Skills and the Role of the State

• Work, Employment and Learning Issues in China and Hong Kong (SAR)

Assessments

In Module 1 each unit will be assessed by an assignment of 4,000 wods and each Module 2 option by an assignment of 5,000 words. Yo will also be required to submit a 5,000 word thesis proposal before being permitted to proceed to the thesis stage of the programme where you will work in close contact with an allocated supervisor. You will be required to submit a thesis of 50,000 words in a field of study approved by the Doctorate Programme Board. The thesis will demonstrate your ability to apply appropriate research methodologies and to analyse issues within the field of work, employment and learning. The thesis must contain original work and be of publishable quality. Doctorate thesis have to be defended at a viva in the presence of two examiners.
