On Tuesday September, 16th 2014 and Wednesday September, 17th 2014, our Quality Assurance team attended a workshop on “Equivalence Evaluation and Credential Assessment” which was hosted by The Caribbean Area Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education (CANQATE).
The aims and objectives of CANQATE are to “enable members to share information about the maintenance, evaluation, accreditation and improvement of higher education and to disseminate good practices in the field of Quality Assurance”. As SBCS is a member of the CANQATE Core group, Mr. Kumar Bobby Sookram – Senior Manager Quality Assurance represented the institution by giving his vote of thanks at the Opening ceremony.
The facilitator was Mrs. Majka Drewitz of Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. based in the USA. Mrs. Drewitz’ specializations include Education systems in Eastern and Western Europe, the former Soviet Union, China, Canada, Latin America, as well as document forensics and francophone systems of education. She is also the co-author of ECE’s 2011 Education in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
The workshop focused on:
• Basics of Credential Evaluation and Assessment
• Degree Equivalence Assessment (with focus on India, Venezuela and Nigeria)
• Strategies for verifying the authenticity of Foreign qualifications
• Authenticity and fraud issues
The Quality Assurance team was appreciative of the experience they acquired in forensics and the practical segment of the sessions where they were afforded the opportunity to utilize specialist tools which were provided to all participants at the workshops.
The two day interactive session was very informative and the team gained vast knowledge on detection of fraudulent international certificates, as well as enhanced their ability to assess International Educational Qualifications for University admissions, recruitment and employment.
