21st CENTURY TEACHING & LEARNING:

INNOVATION IN EDUCATION

.

A number of assumptions are made about education. During class times, mobile devices should be switched off. Learning can only take place in the traditional classroom. Social Media is a distraction to effective learning. This model was effective for a period of time, as many of us were taught with this model. However, is it still effective for the learner of tomorrow, or even the learner of today? As technology and understanding of new pedagogies and active approaches to teaching and learning advance, so too has the access to and form of academic and training programmes offered through learning institutes. As educators, we are charged with the responsibility to effectively and adequately engage students whose desire for and style of learning continue to change with the advancement of the world about them.

This strand calls for expressions of what trends in technology and pedagogy have been or can be incorporated effectively into the teaching and learning practice to keep it relevant to the requirements of our learners. You can draw on your personal successes as well.

MANAGING IN ACADEMIA: A SPECIAL KIND OF LEADERSHIP

In any organisation, effective leadership is of critical importance to its success. This is true not just for corporate entities, but also institutions of higher learning and education.  But, truly, what is academic leadership? How does the character and practice of an academic institution impact on aspects of management and leadership commonly found in corporate organisations?

This strand looks to explore, among other things:

  • Challenges in defining and executing academic leadership
  • The roles involved in academic leadership
  • The guidelines for effective leadership decisions and practices in institutions of higher learning
  • The costs of and obstacles to effective academic leadership

GETTING THEM AND KEEPING THEM:

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, RETENTION AND SUPPORT

The lifeblood of any institution of higher learning and education, is its students.  Students impact the culture, service, innovation and evolution of the institutions they enrol in, but of equal importance is the faculty who impart to these students. An institution’s support and management of their faculty impacts the quality of their service delivery in (and out of) the classroom; whether that classroom be brick-and-mortar or virtual. This strand seeks to elicit thoughts on:

  • Transitioning from secondary to tertiary education
  • Causes and cures of student attrition
  • Encouraging and supporting faculty adoption of educational technology
  • Building faculty support for pedagogical innovation
  • Determinants of student satisfaction and retention
