Celebrating 57 Years of Independence!

Published: 7:11 PM on August 30, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

Tomorrow, our twin-island republic will celebrate the 57th anniversary of Independence, and I extend warm greetings to all citizens for an enjoyable Independence Day celebration.

While achieving Independence remains one of our crowning accomplishments as a nation, the journey to this success was undoubtedly filled with challenges and setbacks. Yet, through grit, determination and heart, the patriotism of our forebears shone through and led us to that fateful moment on August 31, 1962. As a nation, we find ourselves at a crucial juncture in our development: facing real challenges and having to make tough decisions. Yet, I remain confident about the resilience of our people to navigate these turbulent waters.

Nothing worth achieving is done without hard work, sacrifice and dedication, as so aptly demonstrated by our forefathers, who triumphed over much sterner challenges. I have faith in our ability to rise to the task of building a better Trinidad and Tobago.

A bright future lies ahead of us; I look forward to facing our challenges head-on, together. And always remember, what unites us is stronger than what divides us.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day.
