On behalf of the SBCS community, I would like to express heartfelt condolences to the family of former President of Trinidad and Tobago and Principal of UWI – St. Augustine, Professor George Maxwell Richards on his passing.
Professor Richards was a distinguished scholar and educator and served many years in academia. He received, among other accolades, an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University (2007) in recognition of his distinction in the academic discipline of Chemical Engineering as well as public service in Trinidad and Tobago. He was also the University’s guest of honour at their inaugural graduation function for graduates residing in Trinidad and Tobago (2011), held at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad hotel.
The quintessential Trinidadian, Professor Richards exuded warmth and care, and had the ability to communicate with everyone no matter their status. He also had a fantastic sense of humour, which allowed him to maintain his balance even when faced with the most unsettling of situations.
Truly, his character could be said to be reflected in the quote by renowned poet and story-teller, Rudyard Kipling: “If you can walk with the crowd and keep your virtue, or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch …you’ll be a man my son.”
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
