RECAP: SBCS’ 2017 Employment & Career Fair

Published: 11:20 AM on August 14, 2017

SBCS’ Student Services department hosted its annual Employment and Career Fair on August 11, 2017; the theme: “Building Your Personal Brand – Get Noticed. Get In. Stand Out!

Nineteen employers participated, sharing information about internship programs and full-time positions, and nearly 200 current students and alumni from across SBCS’ portfolio of qualifications and campuses attended, making valuable connections and learning about upcoming opportunities.

The annual Fair is designed to connect job seekers with employers. More to this, it grants the former the opportunity to gain information and guidance on academic and professional development pursuits, aimed at improving employment prospects. To help students make the most of the Fair, SBCS hosts complimentary professional development workshops in résumé writing and interview techniques a few weeks ahead of the event.

Theme-specific seminars are also hosted on the day, to both add insight to and refine developed proficiencies in one or more recruitment preparation techniques.  This year, Caron Greaves (BBA Hons, MSc, PGCHE, SPHR) – SBCS lecturer and Managing Director, Choice HR Limited – delivered a session on promoting the personal brand through an effective résumé.

When asked about this year’s event, Executive Director, Dr. Robin Maraj was pleased with the turnout, but noted that there is still more to be done:

“For us, the proof of the quality of our qualifications is in the jobs that our learners are able to secure. Each year, we try to do things differently to make the Fair meaningful and relevant to our job seekers. From the themes we choose to the employers we invite, the entire event is orchestrated to help them gain employment and become more employable.  We had an OK showing this year, but have already set things in motion to make our 2018 offering better in terms of construct and attendance.”

“The upcoming period between Fairs is going to be an exciting one for us,” said Kevon Allen, Manager – Central Academic Administration. “All hands are on deck; no effort is being spared. We have envisioned and commissioned a number of engagement opportunities to connect with SBCS job seekers, and in turn, connect them with employers. What drives us, is that we know this works. Our students have gained employment from attending past Fairs on the strength of their academic training, experience from internship opportunities, the quality of their résumé/CV and their performance in interviews at the event.”
