On Sunday, March 24, 2013, the Student Services Department hosted its first annual SBCS Inter-Campus Cricket Tournament at Presentation College, Chaguanas. The teams represented on the day were: Champs Fleurs, San Fernando, ACCA & Co. and the Staff Team. With “friendly” rivalry among the teams heating up leading to the event, this tournament would finally determine which side was the true cricket champ.
The games commenced with Dr. Robin Maraj bowling the first ball, followed by the first match of the day: Staff vs. ACCA & Co.
Apart from the cricket, spectators were treated to several forms of entertainment including classic arcade games and a Zumba session with instructor Nicholas Gordon. The event also highlighted the fact that there was student talent both on and off the pitch. Throughout the day, ABE students – D.J. Bradley Phillip and M.C. Mikhail Nicholas kept the atmosphere light, with the right music and hype. University of London student M. Chad Phillip was the “chef” for the day providing tasty “Sunday lunch” for the spectators.
There was $600 up for grabs in the “Hit For Six” Contest. Participants got the opportunity to win $100 for each six that was hit in an over bowled by staff captain Ackil Garraway. Several spectators attempted to win the pot, but only Jason Parasram (EEET Diploma) was successful in hitting three sixes, winning $300.
In the end, ACCA & Co., captained by Adrian Mohammed (ACCA), were the champions of the tournament. They beat the San Fernando team into second place and won the challenge trophy and the $2,100 cash prize. Additionally, Mr. Dareem Noel (University of Sunderland) and Ms. Lorraine Pooran (ABE) won the coveted Man and Woman of the Match, respectively.
To the victors went the spoils and now the only question that is left is: who will take home the challenge trophy in 2014?
