The Centre for Media Studies at the Port of Spain Campus recently hosted Dr. Gauti Sigthorsson, the Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at UoG’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
During Dr. Sigthorsson’s visit from May 10 – 14, 2012, he conducted a training workshop with students pursuing their BA (Hons) in Media and Communications. As the programme leader for the Working in Media and Creative Arts unit of the programme, his sessions focused on Networking in the creative industry. Dr. Sigthorsson later conducted a staff development workshop with administrative staff and faculty and paid particular attention to the learning management system Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) and the use of the anti-plagiarism software, Turnitin. Both applications are designed to save time and improve feedback through online grading where standard and customized marks appear directly on the student’s paper and to ensure student submissions are their original work by checking their papers against a vast database of existing publications and libraries.
The Centre of Media Studies also took some time out to show him a little of the island. He was introduced to the giant leather back turtles in Matura on Trinidad’s North East Coast during an excursion which brought together students and staff, as well as the Scarlet Ibis at the Caroni Nariva Swamp.
