Course Brief

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand computer systems and apply theoretical knowledge to practical application when building, configuring and maintaining computer systems. There are many different manufacturers of computer systems and each manufacturer will produce a wide range of models with different specifications. Deciding which particular model is appropriate for a given situation depends on a variety of factors. Custom-built computer systems are also an advantage when meeting specialised requirements, whilst maintaining performance and keeping costs low. Computer Systems is a mandatory core unit that trains students to make informed choices when selecting or building computer systems for a given purpose. Additionally, it is assumed that the ability to set up, use, customise and maintain computer systems is familiar to all IT Professionals. The reality is however, quite different. Students will also be able to apply their theoretical knowledge of how computer systems work to practical applications by building, configuring and testing a functional computer system which will meet a given specification. Students will also learn how to carry out routine maintenance of computer systems.
