Director for Moving Image Production

Aim

This unit aims to develop learners' understanding of the role of director in the moving image production industries, and provide them with the skills needed to act as a director.

Unit abstract

The role of a director can be seen as the creative role in the moving image production process.

The director works with the talent to achieve a creative output whilst working closely with a producer. A director will take overall responsibility for the look, sound and style of a production. It is the director's artistic vision that will guide the work of the producer as they search for suitable locations, hire the cast, manage the design of the sets and lighting, and manage the postproduction process.

The role of the director will be investigated by analysing a range of film, television and video productions. Invariably the role of director will change across different types of production and learners will develop an understanding of the ways in which this role may be adapted.
