Course Brief

AimThis unit provides learners with an opportunity to develop the skills needed to devise and implement a project scope and scheme of work, and evaluate and present the project.Unit abstractThis unit will develop learners' skills in terms of the evaluation and resolution of realistic practical problems and the ability to work as part of a team. This unit also enables the application of knowledge, understanding and skills developed in other units, and where possible experiences from work, to a major piece of work. This unit is designed to bring together small groups of learners into teams so that they can coordinate their individual skills and abilities. The scheme of work should give individual learners an opportunity to take responsibility for their contribution to the outcome, and demonstrate their ability to work as part of a team. The brief will include an agreed timescale, within defined constraints, with the teamworking towards an acceptable and viable solution to the agreed brief. Learners will also develop skills to carry out evaluations of the group project and be able to present solutions.

  • BTEC HND IN Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering)
Building Services Engineering is the engineering of the internal environment and environmental impact of a building. It essentially brings buildings and structures to life. Building services engineers are responsible for the design, installation, operation and monitoring of the mechanical, electrical and public health systems required for the safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly operation of modern buildings. This includes:
    - Water, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, access, transport and electricity
    - Safety and security systems such as fire prevention and detection, escape routes, CCTV and alarms.
Building services engineers also face the challenge of ensuring that buildings are energy efficient to reduce overuse of energy sources and by doing so helping the society reduce the depletion of natural resources and minimize environmental pollution.
HND graduates in Construction and the Built Enviroment (Building Services Engineering) can progress to the final year of our BSc. (Hons) Engineering Management (Construction) or the extended final year BSc. (Hons) Occupational Safety, Health and Environment.
