Course Brief
With the development of new materials and processes, along with technologies that
allow us to design and model more complex structures, the influence on structural
design has become increasingly challenging. The ability to conceive and accurately
model complex buildings, bridges, roads and other types of structure, pushes both
the aesthetic and technical envelope in which structural and civil engineers now
operate.
In managing the design and construction of modern structures, the civil or structural
engineer must be able to carry out increasingly complex calculations, dealing with
dynamic conditions, while maintaining an awareness of the overall design intention.
Extending areas of study from Unit 19: Principles of Structural Design, this unit will
support students to extend their ability to design, test and quantify more complex
structural conditions.

BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Civil Engineering
The Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Civil Engineering is designed to develop students who are professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction and the built environment sector. This qualification aims to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of grandaunts.
The BTEC HND in Civil Engineering programme aims to produce civil engineers who are well equipped to enter the industry in areas such as Site Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Transport Engineering.
This qualification also serves as the next step for students completing the SBCS Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Technology programme and are interested in pursuing the University of Greenwich's BSc (Hons) Engineering Management (Construction) and BSc (Hons) Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (Top-Up) degrees which are also offered at SBCS.
Why choose the HND in Civil Engineering?
- Recognition: This is an Internationally recognized qualification, recognized in more than 70 countries worldwide.
- Final Year Entry: Graduates of this programme gain direct access to the final year of the University of Greenwich's B.Sc. (Hons) Engineering Management (Construction) degree or the University of Greenwich's B.Sc. (Hons) Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (Top-Up) degree.
- Career focused: Persons interested in Civil Engineering can start with this HND. The curriculum was developed to meet the needs of the current marketplace after consultation with employers, students, and professional bodies.
Why study Civil Engineering at SBCS?
- Instructors are certified, highly skilled and experienced practitioners who bring their knowledge and work experience to the classroom.
- Modern, fully equipped labs. You learn using the same equipment you will encounter in the field.
- Convenient class schedules. Work, Earn and Study at the same time. Classes are offered on a part-time basis, which allows working individuals to balance their work and educational needs.
